Exfoliating is the process of removing the dead cells from various parts of the body. These dead cells form a barrier clogging the skin and prevent fresh cells from emerging out. Regular exfoliating will make your skin look fresher and healthier. It also helps with acne lesions and cleanses pores.
Mechanical exfoliation removes dead cells with motion rather than by using chemicals.OTC face scrubs are not only costly but are full of chemicals. There are very good and easy to make home face scrubs which are not only skin-friendly but cheap, with the added advantage that you can be the local guru for your friends and family. The difference between the chemical and homemade scrubs might look trivial but over a period of time say a decade the difference will turn out to be significant.
Exfoliate home face remedy
For preparing the home scrub, you don’t have to go much further than your kitchen cabinet. Here is a list of a few indigenous scrubs.
Cleansing cream and sugar scrub
Wash face thoroughly, put a tsp. of cleansing cream in your palm, add two tsp. of sugar to the cream. Apply the mixture on your face in a circular motion.
Wet a washcloth with lukewarm water and cleanse the face with it. Finish by splashing your face with cold water.
Green Tea, sugar and Honey scrub
Green Tea helps in cleansing and toning of skin, while honey is a natural moisturizer and has antibacterial properties. Brew a cup of extra-strong green tea; prefer loose tea to tea bags. In case you are using the bags, prefer plain tea to preferred ones. Allow the tea to cool to room temperature. To this add sugar to the extent till the watery feeling gets converted to a bit of gritty feel. Mix a tbsp. of honey to the mixture. Your scrub is ready to apply.
Clean your face with fresh water, then apply this scrub to your face. Use a wet cloth to rub the face and finally splash it with cold water.
Vanilla coconut oil and sugar scrub
Coconut oil is an age old solution to various skin and hair problems. It is an excellent moisturizer. To one tbsp. of oil add two tbsp. of sugar, add a couple of vanilla drops to the mixture. Use this scrub on a recently washed face. Rinse after five to ten minutes.
Chocolate Sugar face scrub
Here are the ingredients for this easy to make sweet smelling scrub.
- ¼ cup brown sugar.
- 1/8 cup olive oil
- 1 tbsp. cocoa powder
- ¼ tsp. Vanilla extract.
Pour the contents into a mixing bowl, mix them thoroughly and apply the same to your face. Rinse after a few minutes.
Blueberry and Honey Scrub
The deep blue purple color of the blueberry is the result of compounds called anthocyanins .These powerful antioxidants shield the skin from free radicals and damage to collagen, keeping the skin firm.
Mix ½ cup of fresh blueberries to two tbsp. honey (preferably raw and local) add 1-2 tbsp. of sugar. Blend the same. Apply it on the face for 15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.
Lemon and water face scrub
Lemon lightens pores and evens out the skin tone, while sugar removes the dead skin cells and clean pores. Olive oil is great for acne healing while honey prevents further break out.
- 1 tbsp. olive oil
- 1tbsp. organic honey
- Juice from ½ of lemon
- ½ tbsp. sugar
Juice of half a lemon add organic sugar, olive oil and honey. Once the scrub is ready, apply it in circular motion. Rinse after 5 to 10 minutes.
Honey and oatmeal facial scrub
Oats contain saponins a skin cleansing agent and has anti oxidising properties. It is good for even sensitive skins. Honey gives the skin the glow, takes care of acne and nourishes aging skin. It also has antibacterial and antioxidant properties.
- ½ half cup of uncooked oats
- 1 tbsp. organic honey
- Juice from ½ lemon
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 15 drops of lavender essential oil
- 15 drops of tea tree oil
- 1 tsp. dried lavender.
Grind the oats to break them a bit, you don’t exactly want a powder. To this add the other ingredients. Apply it on your face for a few minutes and rinse with lukewarm water. This will prevent acne breakouts, give even skin tone and moisturize your skin.
Facial Scrub for dry skin
Tomato Sugar face scrub
Tomato is an astringent and is rich in Vitamin A while sugar is a natural exfoliant.
Cut the top of the tomato, sprinkle sugar on a plate and make it even. Rotate the tomato over the spread sugar so that it is absorbed evenly.
Start applying it to the face in circular motion.
Papaya face mask
Blend the papaya into a mesh add a little bit of honey and lemon juice to it. Mix them well.
Wash the face and apply this mask, for at least 15 minutes. Use warm water to take off the mask . Eventually rinse it with cold water.
Homemade exfoliating face scrub for oily skin
Oily skin has much larger pores compared to the dry skin. It is also comparatively thicker. Make up does not stay and tends to slide off from this skin. It wards off wrinkles better than dry skin because the oil keeps the skin moist and smother.
Here are a few face masks specific to oily skin.
Apple Cider Vinegar Mask: ACV has been used as a skin toner since the days of Helen of Troy,
- ¼ cup of ACV
- ¼ cup of water
Mix ACV with water and apply it on the face as a mask. Allow it to dry for fifteen minutes. Rinse with water.
Yogurt face mask: Another cost effective way to cleanse your skin.
Ingredients are as underneath:
- 1 tsp. plain yogurt
- 2 tsp. juice from an Orange
- A bit of orange pulp
- 1 tsp. aloe Vera
Mix the ingredients and apply them on your face for around 20 minutes. Rinse with water.
Cucumber mask: Cucumber contains Vitamin C and Caffeic acid two antioxidants which help of fend wrinkles.
- ½ cup cucumber(peel removed)
- One egg white
- 1 tsp. lemon juice
- 1 drop peppermint essential oil.
Mix the ingredients in the blender and apply the same on the face for no less than 15 minutes. Rinse it with water.
Avocado Face mask: Avocado contains healthy fats, chlorophyll to reduce inflammation, water to hydrate and Vitamin E to promote softness and keep skin wrinkle free. It is a star in its own right for the skin.
Remove the pit and skin from an avocado and mash it until a smooth consistency is achieved, add
- 1 tbsp. of lemon juice
- 1tbsp. of olive oil
- 1 tbsp. of honey and milk
Mix the same and apply to your face, for at least 15 minutes. Rinse with water after that.
Homemade exfoliating scrub for legs:
Pour Vinegar and Listerine into a tub, Add enough warm water to cover the affected area completely. Soak your legs for 15 – 20 minutes. Remove your legs and rub them with a pumice stone.
Homemade exfoliating face scrub for acne:
Ingredients used are:
- 1 tsp. Baking Soda
- ½ tsp.Honey
- 1 tsp. Lemon Juice
Baking soda deeply exfoliates the skin, getting rid of grime, dead cells and excess sebum from the cells. Lemon Juice acts as a natural astringent to reduce the production of sebum. Add each of the three ingredients in a bowl and mix them thoroughly. Apply the mixture on the face in circular motions for 2 to 4 minutes. Wash it off with warm water. Later rinse it with cold water.
